ECA Newsletter 9- July to December 2025

Letter From the Director Welcome to this our nineteenth ECA newsletter for Eco Custodian Advocates. PNG has been through its 50th year of Independence and is going into a ‘reset’ that doesn’t build on the goals and directive principles of the people’s aspirations of 1975, nor on a review of our natural environment and customs associated with managing it, how we are doing. The work of ECA and other likeminded NGOs therefore remains relevant within this ‘neglect’ in the government’s development direction. It was a shock for us to lose one of our community champions in the late Elama Peter and we dedicate this Newsletter to his memory and his legacy within ‘Gwala Rising’ and ‘Gwala is Life’. We continue to encourage the practice of gwala in other cultures, gola on Konekonegolu, the hambun, soŋot of the NE small islands of Manus, gelegele in the Duke of York islands. Along with working together with communities in their learning of skills for keeps. A bit of the past on fish traps and pots and some challenges of the present From this point we a sailing towards our 10th year, of ECAs journey.
