Map with existing and proposed protected areas in PNG. Status on August 2017. Produced by CEPA.

The Protected Areas Bill (PA Bill) is a proposed piece of legislation that will guide the establishment and management of protected areas in Papua New Guinea. It will be administered by the PNG Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA). Amongst other things, the PA Bill sets out various governance arrangements that need to be established by CEPA. To implement the legislation effectively, CEPA needs to be well prepared for these arrangements and have relevant administrative structures in place prior to the PA Bill being approved.

An unprecedented increase in oil palm developments may be underway in Papua New Guinea (PNG) through controversial ‘Special Agricultural and Business Leases’ (SABLs) covering over two million ha. Oil palm development can create societal benefits, but doubt has been raised about whether the SABL developers intend establishing plantations. Here we examine the development objectives of these proposals through an assessment of their land suitability, developer experience and capacity, and socio-legal constraints.

There are active drinking water or freshwater monitoring progra mmes in 11 of 14 Pacific countries and 6 of 7 territories. The primary challenge is the regularity and frequency of sampling, the capacity to process samples accurately in country, and the official response process to the findings. There is no regional data collation for this proposed indicator , to date. The proposed Sustainable Highlands Highway Infrastructure Program (SHHIP) is envisaged as a ten- year, multi-partner, multi-tranche financing facility aiming to restore and upgrade the Highlands Highway in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The executing agency is the PNG Department of Works (DoW). The initial climate screening of SHHIP using AWARE determined the Investment Program to be at medium risk to climate and climate change. As a result, ADB procedures require that a climate risk and vulnerability assessment (CRVA) be undertaken during the design stage.
