PNG is endowed with rich natural resources and culture and is known as one of the cultural and mega biodiversity hotspots globally. Located on the eastern part of the island of New Guinea, PNG contains roughly 1 percent of the global landmass, with four major islands and over 600 islands and atolls. PNG also has one of the diverse reef system in the world and has a total of 3.12 square kilometers of economic exclusive zone (EEZ) of marine territory. Over 840 spoken languages exist and spoken by over 1000 different tribes.

Global climate change initiatives to reduce emissions from avoided deforestation and degradation (REDD) represent both a threat and opportunity for the Malaysian logging corporation ‘Rimbunan Hijau’, the largest forestry operator in Papua New Guinea. Although Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation in developing countries is first and foremost a climate change mitigation option, it also has the potential to generate benefits for indigenous and local communities (UNEP 2010).

This report arises from the Final Evaluation Mission for the Programme. The evaluation has reported according to a format specific to GEF requirements for an assessment to the completion of the Programme. There is an active dialogue in PNG about what might come after the completion of the pilot Programme, building on the foundations which it has laid for strengthened biodiversity conservation. In particular, there is a keen interest in the future for the communities and biodiversity values of the two areas in which ICAD processes were initiated.

Resource contains raster files for a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and derived hillshade for Papua New Guinea.

The ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model (GDEM) Version 3 (ASTGTM) provides a global digital elevation model (DEM) of land areas on Earth at a spatial resolution of 1 arc second (approximately 30 meter horizontal posting at the equator).

This resource contains 30-meter resolution satellite imagery for Papua New Guinea. The imagery was collected during the years 2018-2020 from the Landsat-8 satellite. Images were selected for their visibility, however there is cloud cover present in the final images due to the size of Papua New Guinea and availability of datasets. This imagery should be used for guidance only and cited as "Landsat-8 image courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey" if used in any presentations or other work.
