For the Ninth Pacific Islands Conference on Nature Conservation and Protected Areas December 2013, the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) commissioned an assessment of the status of biodiversity and conservation in Oceania. This report assesses the overall state of conservation in Papua New Guinea using 16 indicators.

Esso Highlands Limited (Esso) proposes to develop the Papua New Guinea Liquefied Natural Gas Project
(PNG LNG Project) in a co-venture with other participants. Esso (as project operator) will produce and condition gas from new and existing petroleum fields in the Southern Highlands and Western provinces of Papua New Guinea, send the conditioned gas by pipeline across Gulf Province and the Gulf of Papua to a 6.3-Mtpa LNG Plant in Central Province, liquefy the gas, and load it onto LNG carriers for export. The project will also produce condensate for export.

The NEMS 2021-2025 is the first for PNG and is linked to the SoE 2020 report. It is intended to guide various stakeholders in collaboration with CEPA to implement key policies, programmes and actions, to promote sustainable development and conservation of the environment of the country. The NEMS is a framework that links related key government policies and programmes, including other international obligations, to provide a roadmap for environmental actions and stewardship.
