Esso Highlands Limited (Esso) proposes to develop the Papua New Guinea Liquefied Natural Gas Project
(PNG LNG Project) in a co-venture with other participants. Esso (as project operator) will produce and condition gas from new and existing petroleum fields in the Southern Highlands and Western provinces of Papua New Guinea, send the conditioned gas by pipeline across Gulf Province and the Gulf of Papua to a 6.3-Mtpa LNG Plant in Central Province, liquefy the gas, and load it onto LNG carriers for export. The project will also produce condensate for export.

This disposal project is the second stage (Phase II) of an AusAID-fiuided project developed in conjunction with South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) to manage persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in Pacific Island Countries (PICs). The Phase I project, which was implemented between April 1997 and April 2000. involved an inventory of hazardous chemicals, and a discussion of management options for obsolete chemicals and containers, in the PICs. Although many obsolete agricultural and other chemicals can be disposed of safely locally, others cannot.
During the 1st Japan-Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM), convened in 1997, the importance of providing assistance by Japan to the Solid Waste Management sector in the Pacific Island Countries (PICs) was determined. In successive PALM meetings, which are held very three years, initiatives were taken to translate this decision into actions.
